Every painting begins with an idea, but sometimes an idea becomes something much bigger than you ever expected.

That's what has happened with Heart to Heart.

This series isn't simply about painting horses. It's about honoring the connection I've felt with them throughout my life and exploring how that connection has shaped who I am.

I grew up in Montana, where horses weren't just beautiful animals in the distance—they were woven into everyday life. Some of my happiest childhood memories are of horses, rodeos, open fields, and the rhythm of farm life. Those experiences taught me to appreciate strength, resilience, and quiet companionship long before I could put those feelings into words.

Now, years later, I find myself returning to those memories through oil paint.

As I work on each canvas, I'm discovering that every horse has its own personality. Some are bold and spirited. Others are gentle, reflective, or quietly curious. My goal isn't simply to paint what a horse looks like, but to capture what it feels like to stand in its presence.

The title Heart to Heart came naturally because horses have an extraordinary ability to connect with people without words. They remind us to slow down, to be present, and to simply listen.

That idea has become even more meaningful because of my brother. Through his work with equine therapy, I've witnessed the profound ways horses can help people heal emotionally. Watching him devote his life to helping others through these remarkable animals has deepened my own appreciation for the quiet wisdom horses possess. His work continues to inspire this series, and I have tremendous respect and admiration for what he does.

As an artist, I hope these paintings encourage viewers to pause—not just to admire a horse, but to remember a relationship, a memory, or a moment of peace in their own lives.

Creating this series has also challenged me as a painter. I'm experimenting with larger canvases, richer light, stronger compositions, and deeper emotion. Each painting teaches me something new, and each one brings me closer to the story I want to tell.

Some paintings celebrate freedom through the power of wild horses running together. Others focus on quiet portraits where a single glance can say more than words ever could. Together, they become conversations about trust, healing, strength, and hope.

This series is still growing.

In many ways, I'm growing alongside it.

The inspiration to become an artist for me was driven by a deep need to communicate the beauty I see all around me. From a young age, I was drawn to art, beginning my journey as a child. However, it wasn’t until I retired that I finally had the time and space to truly pursue my passion for creating.

One of the most significant challenges I have faced as an artist is the constant battle between my left and right brain. Both sides are equally strong within me, and this sometimes creates an internal struggle. The logical, analytical left brain often conflicts with the creative, intuitive right brain, making it a unique challenge to balance my approach to art. Yet, this also became a breakthrough moment in my career when I discovered how this battle influenced my work and growth as an artist.

Over time, my style and approach have evolved significantly. I am now painting with much more confidence, which has allowed me to work looser and more freely. This newfound freedom has enriched my expression and depth in art, helping me to better convey the stories I want to share.

My work has been greatly influenced by a few remarkable artists: Greg Beecham, Howard Terpning, and Robert Hagan. Their styles and dedication have inspired me to refine my craft and deepen my connection to the subjects I portray. When it comes to mediums, I prefer oil paint for its forgiving nature and the depth and richness it brings to my work. Oil allows me to layer, refine, and express nuances in a way that other mediums do not.

I have had many memorable projects over the years. One that stands out in particular is “Medicine Spirit.” This piece was painted freehand, and I felt as though it was coming alive right before my eyes. It was as if the painting was telling its own story and I was merely a tool for it to communicate that narrative. Experiences like this have truly shaped my journey and deepened my love for art.

Art plays a vital role in my life, both personally and professionally. When I create something that brings happiness to others, I feel a profound sense of fulfillment. It gives me a voice—a way to express the stories and emotions I hold inside. Staying motivated and creative, especially during difficult times, is important to me. I find solace and inspiration by immersing myself in nature and feeling grateful for my ability to transform simple moments into something meaningful that speaks to others.

Balancing art with other responsibilities can be challenging. I have learned that setting specific times dedicated to creating art is essential to maintaining that balance and continuing to grow in my practice.

Criticism and feedback are never easy to receive, but I have come to appreciate their value. Through comments and critiques from others, I have learned and improved, making them an important part of my artistic development.

Looking ahead, my goal is to create a portfolio of work that people will seek out and cherish in their collections. Connecting with my audience on an emotional level is how I engage with the community through my art. I want those who view my work to feel a connection, a pause, and perhaps a renewed appreciation for the beauty in the world around them.

To emerging artists starting their own journey, my advice is to learn what your niche is and perfect it. Avoid getting dragged into rabbit holes chasing after too many different art forms that may lead you away from discovering and honing who you truly are as an artist.

Finally, I am deeply grateful that God has given me the gift to see the beauty surrounding me. To be able to craft stories that convey the depth of my subjects, and to share these stories with others, is a blessing. My hope is that those who view my art will pause, take a breath, and enjoy the beauty that is so often overlooked in our busy lives.

This is my journey—a lifelong pursuit to celebrate and communicate the world’s beauty through art.

"Back to the Wind," a 10 x 10" gallery wrap oil painting that captures a moment of serene beauty through the side profile Rio's head. This piece is particularly special to me, as he belongs to a friend. I was so drawn to his gentle eye of Rio, a horse whose calm presence and flowing mane evoked a peaceful and reflective energy.

Creating "Back to the Wind" was an immersive journey. As I worked with oil paints, the rich tones of deep browns, blacks, and whites began to breathe life into Rio's facial features. Each brushstroke was a purposeful effort to highlight the horse's natural beauty and texture. The intricate details of the eyes, nostrils, and mane are intended to draw you in, inviting you to notice the delicate nuances that make each horse uniquely magnificent.

The background of this piece fades softly into shades of blue and light gray, creating a harmonious balance that naturally focuses your attention on the horse. This subtle backdrop not only enhances the vivid detail of Rio’s features but also adds a layer of tranquility, making the artwork feel like a gentle whisper of nature’s calm.

I am thrilled to share with you the painting that inspired my new series: HEART TO HEART. This beautiful, gentle natured, buckskin horse belongs to my nephew. Recently I was searching through my references and came upon this photo. It was a full body photo, but I chose to paint his head because I liked how the afternoon light illuminated his face. When I put the highlight in Jimmy’s eyes, he jumped off the canvas and spoke to the depth of my soul in a way that I knew I needed to paint a series of horses. This was not a casual decision; it was deeply inspired by the profound connection that exists between humans and the horse, and by my brother, Jeff Patterson’s work. “JIMMY BOY” measures 12 x 12 inches and features a gallery wrap, crafted lovingly with oil paint. It serves as an ode to the gentle and mesmerizing beauty of a horse named Jimmy.
Jimmy Boy is a painting that captures the essence of Jimmy’s head and neck in exquisite detail. The rich, buckskin coat of Jimmy gleams with subtle variations in shading, adding both depth and realism to his fur. His mane, predominantly black with delicate segments cascading down his forehead and neck, contributes to his natural and majestic look. One glance at Jimmy’s expressive eye and you’ll feel an intimate connection, as if you’re sharing a silent, soulful conversation with him.

The decision to keep the background plain white was intentional—it creates a stark yet stunning contrast that ensures all attention is devoted to Jimmy’s captivating beauty.

This piece was deeply inspired by Jimmy’s gentle eye and the way his coat dazzles in the afternoon sun. There’s a certain magical luminosity that dances on his coat, creating a visual symphony that I am passionate about capturing through my brushstrokes.

Each stroke and hue in "Jimmy Boy" has been placed with love and care, creating a three-dimensionality that invites you into his world. This artwork not only showcases Jimmy’s external beauty but also aims to reflect the gentle spirit that lies within.

Painted from a picture I took last summer at my Son's farm. There were three kits and they were so cute. I'll be painting more of these cuties.

I donated this piece to the silent auction at the Wallowa Festival of Arts this year and I was fortunate to observe three buyers battling over it. The lady that was the lucky high bidder said she wasn't leaving without it. She told me that she loved the cute little face and it was to be a birthday present for her husband.  It is always encouraging when someone likes a piece of my work.
